Accelerating Insights from Unstructured Text with AI Powered OneLake Shortcut Transformations

Shortcut‑based AI transformations in Microsoft Fabric convert raw text files into governed Delta Lake tables within minutes, removing the need for complex data‑integration pipelines and significantly reducing time to insight.

Why adopt AI transformations?

  • Faster insights: Convert unstructured text to query‑ready Delta tables in minutes; no ETL scripts required.
  • Reduced operational overhead: The transformation engine monitors the source every two minutes and refreshes outputs automatically.
  • Built‑in compliance: PII detection assists with GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulatory mandates by redacting sensitive data before it reaches analytics workloads.
  • Consistent data quality: Microsoft‑hosted language models provide standardized sentiment scores, entity tags and translations, eliminating manual data‑preparation drift.S

Supported AI transforms

TransformPurpose
SummarizationGenerates concise summaries from long-form text.
TranslationTranslates text between supported languages.
Sentiment analysisLabels text sentiment as positivenegative, or neutral.
PII detectionFinds and redacts personally identifiable information (names, phone numbers, emails).
Name recognitionExtracts named entities such as people, organizations, or locations.

How to set up an AI powered shortcut transformations

  1. Create a shortcut – In the Lakehouse, select + New  Shortcut and point to a folder of .txt files in ADLS, S3, GCS or another Fabric workspace.
  2. Apply a transformation – In the wizard, from Transformations (preview), choose AI transformation and select one of the options listed.
Shortcut transformation experience to pick the AI powered transformations.

3. Monitor progress – Status can be observed under Manage shortcut.

Practical implementation patterns

  • Customer‑feedback sentiment dashboard: Point a shortcut at yesterday’s review exports, choose Sentiment analysis, and publish a Power BI report that surfaces net sentiment by product, region and time period.
  • Multilingual support intelligence: Route global support logs through Translation (to English) followed by optional Summarization, giving managers a single, prioritized list of issues across every market.
  • Privacy‑first LLM fine‑tuning: Apply PII detection to call center transcripts to create a compliant dataset that is immediately ready for model training.
  • Real‑time market signals: Stream a newswire feed through Name recognition to tag companies, people and locations, enrich your knowledge graph and trigger alerts the moment a relevant story breaks.

All these solutions run continuously, no notebooks or pipelines to maintain, keeping your focus on insights, not infrastructure.

What’s coming next

Shortcut transformations will soon go beyond text formats:

  • JSON to Delta: Automatically convert semi‑structured JSON collections into fully typed Delta tables, ideal for application logs and API payloads.
  • Parquet to Delta: Surface existing Parquet assets as native Delta Lake tables without code changes or data movement.
