New features in Mirroring for Azure SQL Managed Instance – private endpoint support and more

Mirroring in Microsoft Fabric allows you to seamlessly reflect your existing data estate from Azure SQL Managed Instance into OneLake. The mirrored data is automatically kept up to date in near real-time, enabling advanced analytics and reporting to generate essential business insights.

Since our preview announcement of Mirroring for Azure SQL Managed Instance, we have listened to your valuable feedback and made continuous improvements to the mirroring capabilities. We are thrilled to announce the latest updates that facilitate replicating your Azure SQL Managed Instance data into Fabric across various scenarios, including private endpoint support via gateways, mirroring tables without primary keys and expanded DDL operation support.

Mirror Azure SQL Managed Instance behind firewall

Mirroring for Azure SQL Managed Instance now offers enhanced connectivity through private endpoints, eliminating the need to enable public access on your instance. You can establish secure connections to your database using a virtual network data gateway or an on-premises data gateway. This feature ensures robust security by facilitating connections within a private network. For detailed guidance, refer to the Azure SQL Managed Instance mirroring tutorial.

Mirror tables without primary keys

We’ve relaxed the restriction to allow you to mirror Azure SQL Managed Instance tables even if they don’t have primary keys defined. This improvement offers increased flexibility for customers who need to replicate data from source databases with varied table structures. With the dependency on primary keys eliminated, you can mirror a broader range of tables while maintaining data integrity throughout the process. Support for expanded Data Definition Language (DDL)

In addition to Alter, Drop, and Rename tables or columns, you can now perform Truncate tables in the source databases while mirroring is active. This added functionality ensures seamless compatibility between mirroring process and critical DDL operations, providing users with the flexibility to manage the source databases without interrupting replication.
