Introduction of item limits in a Fabric workspace

Previously, there were no restrictions on the number of Fabric items that could be created in a workspace, with a limit for Power BI items already being enforced. Even though this allows flexibility for our users, having too many items in workspaces reduces the overall user friendliness and effectiveness of the platform.

As of April 10, 2025, Microsoft Fabric has implemented updates to the total number of items permissible in a workspace. This change introduces a combined limit of 1,000 Fabric items (including Power BI items) per workspace. In other words, a workspace may now contain up to 1,000 items from both Fabric and Power BI collectively.

This improves usability of the workspace and simplifies organization of Fabric items. This also improves service quality and reliability for users.

How will this impact users?

For workspaces with fewer than 1,000 items, the limit is effective immediately.
Workspaces with more than 1,000 items will have a 180-day extension period that is automatically applied (starting April 10, 2025) where new items can still be created, but it is not recommended. After 180 days (on Oct 7, 2025), the limit would be effective.

Once the limit is effective, no new items can be created until the total number of items is below 1,000. This limit impacts only new item creation and does not affect existing items.

We advise admins to evaluate the number of items in workspaces in their tenant and develop a comprehensive plan for managing current and future workspaces.

The total number of items in a workspace can be accessed in the Admin Monitoring workspace by tenant admins, specifically within the Feature Adoption and Usage Report under the Inventory section. You can find the documentation here: Item Counts in Admin Monitoring Workspace.

Additionally, users with Admin, Member, or Contributor roles in a workspace can determine the number of items by clicking the ‘Select all’ checkbox in the top left corner. This action will show the total number of items within that workspace.
