Introducing enhanced conversation with Microsoft Fabric Copilot and AI Skill (Preview)

Enhancing AI Functionalities with a Commitment to Privacy and Security

At Microsoft, we continuously strive to enhance our services based on valuable customer feedback and evolving needs. In response to our data storage commitments, we are introducing improvements to AI functionalities in Microsoft Fabric. We are thrilled to introduce a new way to store chat prompts and history, improved accuracy of responses, and better context knowledge retention. Here’s a detailed overview of what this means for you and the benefits it brings.

Benefits to users

Improved accuracy of responses

One of the key benefits of this change is that chat conversations will now be used to improve the accuracy of the responses provided by AI functionalities. This means more precise and reliable answers, enhancing the overall user experience.

Enhanced efficacy of Copilot chat

By leveraging cross-Geo data storage, users can experience significantly improved inline chat functionality within the AI Skill (coming soon) and Copilot experience in the Fabric notebook. For instance, when working on a data science project, a user can ask the Copilot in notebooks to explain complex code snippets in real-time, receive contextually relevant suggestions, or even inquire about potential data anomalies. The Copilot will not only understand these queries but also provide conversational responses, making interactions more intuitive and efficient.

Consider a user asking, ‘What does this error mean?’, while debugging code in a Fabric notebook. Copilot can immediately respond with a detailed explanation of the error, possible causes, and suggested solutions. This conversational capability enhances the overall user experience by offering precise and relevant information tailored to the user’s current task.

Context knowledge retention

Storing conversational history helps retain context knowledge. By keeping a record of interactions, the AI Skill and Copilot for Data Engineering and Data Science can better understand projects and user preferences, leading to smoother interactions. For instance, the AI can recall discussions about specific datasets or coding techniques to provide tailored advice and warnings, boosting productivity and user satisfaction. Importantly, users can delete this context history at any time, ensuring their control over their data. Additionally, this conversational history is not used by Microsoft for training models or for any other purposes, maintaining the highest standards of data privacy and security.

Context and overview

For certain AI functionalities in Fabric, such as Copilot for Data Engineering and Data Science and the AI Skill, we are now storing chat prompts and history to improve the relevancy and accuracy of Copilot conversations.

How to enable

For customers in the EU and the United States, this feature will be turned on by default and will adhere to geographic storage commitments.

For customers outside the EU and the US, an additional tenant setting switch must be enabled in order to use AI Skills and the Copilot experience in Fabric notebooks. This ‘cross-geo storage’ switch is shown in the example.  Once this switch is enabled, customers outside of the EU and the US will be able to use the AI Skill and Copilot for Data Science and Data Engineering.

Note that if your capacity is outside of the EU and US and you have not enabled this setting, the AI Skill in Microsoft Fabric and Copilot for Data Science and Data Engineering (Preview) will be disabled by default. This setting can be toggled in the same page as the tenant administration setting for enabling Azure OpenAI in Fabric:

Privacy and security

At Microsoft, privacy and security are of utmost concern. We are making this change based on customer input and feedback, and we want to assure you that we still do not store data for the purpose of abuse monitoring, nor will the stored data be used for the purpose of training Microsoft AI, as per Azure OpenAI’s product terms. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of data privacy and security, ensuring that your information is protected at all times.

Next Steps

As we continue to make enhancements to the AI capabilities in Fabric, we will continue sharing product updates. If you haven’t already, explore Copilot for Data Engineering and Data Science and create an AI Skill.
