TLS deprecation for Fabric

Fabric Platform support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.1 and earlier versions will end on July 31, 2025

To align with Azure and the rest of Microsoft, Fabric platform will soon require TLS 1.2 or later versions for all outbound connections from Fabric to customer data sources. All incoming connections to Fabric Platform already required TLS 1.2 or later versions since June 2020. For more details, refer to the blog post – Deprecating TLS 1.0 and 1.1 support in Power BI.

While many services have already retired the legacy versions of TLS, Fabric will stop supporting TLS 1.1 or earlier versions by July 31, 2025. After then, TLS 1.2 or later will be required for all connections from Fabric to customer data sources. If you have resources that interact with Azure services and still use TLS 1.1 or earlier, you are required to transition them to TLS 1.2 or later by that date.

The Microsoft implementation of older TLS versions is not known to be vulnerable, however, TLS 1.2 or later offer improved security with features such as:

  • Enhanced security and encryption, which are essential for protecting data and maintaining the integrity of communications.
  • Enables secure data transfer over a network.
  • Combines symmetric and asymmetric cryptography to enhance security and help build a Zero Trust architecture.
  • Replaces the MD5/SHA-1 combination in the digitally signed element with a single hash, ensuring increased security during the handshake.
  • Supports increased authentication encryption.
  • Adds TLS extensions and AES cipher suites.
