Evolved Activator Destination in Eventstream – Process & Route Events to Activator (Preview)

Announcing processing and Routing Events to Activator with Eventstream in preview!

Fabric Activator (previously Data Activator) is a no-code experience for automatically take actions when patterns or conditions are detected in data. You use the activator item (previously reflex item) to manage the rules and actions.

Fabric event streams under Real-Time Intelligence, represented by ‘Eventstream’ as a Fabric item, aims to establish a centralized place on the Fabric platform for seamlessly capturing real-time events from diverse sources, transforming it, and routing it to various destinations.

Now, Eventstream supports processing and transforming events with business requirements before routing the events to the destination: Activator. When these transformed events reach Activator, you can establish rules or conditions for your alerts to monitor the events.

What’s New

You may observe that Eventstream previously supported the Reflex destination. What distinguishes the former Reflex destination from the new Activator destination, aside from the name change?

Here are primary differences:

  • Eventstream is now capable of transforming events before writing the events to Activator. This enhancement addresses frequent customer requests during the earlier preview period. We have taken your feedback into account and implemented this feature.
  • Event data in multiple formats is now supported for routing to Activator, rather than being limited to the JSON format only.
  • The new Activator destination eliminates the ’10-events per second’ constraint, allowing it to receive events with higher throughput.

With the addition of transformation capabilities, the typical topology of an eventstream with this destination would include several operators inserted between the default stream and the Activator destination if your business alert requires transformed events from your eventstream, as illustrated in the screenshot:

Start using this feature

This feature is currently available in preview, using this feature within Eventstream is both straightforward and user-friendly. Consider the following example: sensor data from an Azure event hub is being transmitted into an Eventstream. We aim to calculate the average temperature data over a 5-minute window and route this aggregated data to an activator for alerting purposes.

Create an eventstream and connect to the Azure event hub

You can create the eventstream on the Workspace page, and then select Add external source on the Get started page of this eventstream. From the popup wizard, choose Azure Event Hub source and configure all the necessary parameters. For step-by-step guide details, visit: Add Azure Event Hubs source to an eventstream – Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn. Once the Azure event hub source is added, you will be directed to the Edit mode for your events transformation and routing design:

Transform and route events within Eventstream

After adding the Azure event hub source, you can preview data to design event processing logic. Use the manageField operator to select fields like entryTime, messageId, deviceID, and temperature. Add an aggregate operator to calculate the average temperature in 5-minute windows. Once the transformation logic is complete, add the activator destination via the drop-down menu by pressing + on the canvas or the ‘Add destination’ button on the ribbon.

Topology and configuration example:

Once everything is properly designed and configured in eventstream edit mode, select Publish to apply these changes in Live view. It will take approximately 1 to 2 minutes for the backend service to become operational in order to start processing and routing the events to your activator.

You may choose the destination node of the activator to view the details and navigate to your activator in order to confirm the actual data routed to it.

Set the alert in Activator

You can now configure the alert in your activator by selecting the ‘AVG_temperature’ column and setting the condition to ‘is greater than 25’.

Try it now and share your feedback with us.

While the rest of Real-Time Intelligence has recently reached General Availability, this feature is still in public preview while we monitor usage and feedback. Try it with your Fabric account.
