That’s a wrap for Build 2025!

Microsoft Build 2025 delivered a powerful vision for the future of data and AI, with Microsoft Fabric and Power BI at the heart of the story. From AI-powered productivity with Copilot to deep integration with Cosmos DB, this year’s announcements reinforced Microsoft’s commitment to unifying the data experience across roles, tools, and industries.

Fabric: The Unified Data Foundation Expands

Fabric continues to evolve as the end-to-end service for data engineering, science, warehousing, and real-time intelligence.

  • Fabric Roadmap Tool: A new centralized hub for tracking upcoming features across Fabric workloads, offering real-time updates and integration with internal planning tools.
  • Cosmos DB in Fabric (Preview): Bringing AI-ready NoSQL capabilities into the Fabric ecosystem.
  • Mirroring Enhancements: Expanded support for SQL Server, Azure PostgreSQL, and Cosmos DB, enabling real-time replication and analytics.
  • Digital twin builder (Preview): Introduced as a new artifact within Microsoft Fabric Real-Time Intelligence, digital twin builder enables users to create and manage digital representations of real-world environments using a low-code/no-code interface.

These updates reflect Fabric’s growing maturity as a platform that supports both technical depth and business agility.

Power BI: Intelligent and Everywhere

Build 2025 showcased how Power BI is evolving to meet the needs of both business users and developers. Most notably:

  • Standalone Copilot in Power BI (Preview): Users can now “Ask Anything” using natural language, powered by Fabric’s semantic models.
  • Translytical Task Flows: Automate report actions and enable data write-back directly from Power BI reports .

What if generating embeddings in Eventhouse didn’t require an external endpoint, callout policies, throttling management, or per‑request costs? That’s exactly what slm_embeddings_fl() delivers: a new user-defined function (UDF) that generates text embeddings using local Small Language Models (SLMs) from within the Kusto Python sandbox, returning vectors that you can immediately use for semantic search, similarity … Continue reading “Create Embeddings in Fabric Eventhouse with built-in Small Language Models (SLMs)”
