SharePoint files destination the first file-based destination for Dataflows Gen2

The introduction of file-based destinations for Dataflows Gen2 marks a significant step forward in enhancing collaboration, historical tracking, and sharing data for business users. This development begins with SharePoint file destinations in CSV format, offering a streamlined way to share with users on the SharePoint platform.

Overview of file-based destinations

File-based destinations allow data to be exported and stored in formats that are easily accessible for business users and analysts. These destinations provide flexibility for organizations to work with data outside of traditional database environments. By enabling such functionality, Dataflows Gen2 aims to support diverse workflows, enhance data accessibility, and cater to users who need effective solutions.

SharePoint as the starting point

SharePoint files in CSV format serve as the first file-based destination we introduce for Dataflows Gen2. This choice underscores the importance of collaboration, as SharePoint is widely used across organizations for document sharing and team-based workflows. With CSV files stored within SharePoint, users can:

  • Collaborate across departments by sharing centralized data files.
  • Ensure top-level summary analytics are retained for historical tracking in a business tool.
  • Leverage the simplicity and portability of CSV files for analysis in tools like Excel.

Available settings for file-based destinations

The following settings are available for configuring SharePoint CSV file destinations in Dataflows Gen2:

  • File Location: specify the SharePoint folder or directory where the CSV files will be stored.
  • File Name: define a static value or use parameters to change it depending on the context.
  • File format: delimited text (csv) is the first of many to come that is supported.
  • File origin: the way we write the file, by default we use UTF-8, change this if your application needs another format.
  • Delimiter: change the delimiter used for the delimited files.

Future direction

The introduction of SharePoint CSV destinations is just the beginning. Dataflows Gen2 plans to expand file-based destinations to include other formats and platforms, enabling broader compatibility. This evolution aligns with the overarching goal of providing users with versatile options for data management and analytics.
