Introducing ownership takeover for Fabric items

Today, when an item owner leaves the company, their credentials expire, or they lose access, many Fabric items cease to function. For example, Lakehouses and their SQL Endpoints become inoperative, pipelines fail to execute due to user access errors. In these situations, enabling another user to assume ownership would ensure business continuity.

We are pleased to announce that Fabric users with the right permissions can now take ownership of Fabric items.

How does this work?

Fabric users who have read and write permissions on Fabric items (i.e., admin, member, contributors in a workspace) can take ownership of a Fabric item.

To take ownership of a Fabric item, please follow these steps:

  • Navigate to your Fabric workspace and locate the item which needs ownership change.
  • Access the item’s settings.
  • In the About tab, select Take over. This initiates the background process of updating the item’s owner to the user attempting to take ownership.
  • A message bar will indicate whether the takeover operation succeeded or failed.
  • If a connection used by the item stops functioning after the takeover, users can edit the connection within the item.

The existing Take over feature for Power BI items will continue to work, while this new feature is being introduced for other Fabric items. Furthermore, ownership change is currently not supported for Mirrored Database items.

What’s next?

The current feature allows users to take Fabric item ownership via the UI. In the future, we plan to add support for taking ownership of Fabric items via APIs.

If you have any suggestions for further enhancements to this feature, please share your ideas on Microsoft Fabric Ideas.
